Why shock chlorinate a water well:
A noticeable change in well production or a noticeable change in water quality. (physical properties i.e. smell, taste, color)
- One of the most common reasons for drop in well production or change in physical properties of water can be caused by Iron Bacteria or Sulphate Reducing Bacteria.
- If physical property changes are noticed, then a chemical analysis performed by a laboratory is recommended to make sure that these characteristics are not being caused by some other well problem that may not be easily fixed by shock chlorination (some type of well contamination). If chemical lab results come back with changes in results vastly different from any previous tests performed, then a licensed well driller should be consulted to ascertain a possible reason for this change and possible plan to remedy the problem.
- If you are confident that iron bacteria or sulphate reducing bacteria contamination may be your concern then shock chlorination of your well would be a step worth using to try and remedy this problem.
